Job Description - YSC Board of Directors

Young Survival Coalion (YSC) strengthens the community, addresses the unique needs, amplifies the voice and improves the quality of life of young adults affected by breast cancer, locally, nationally and internationally.

The board supports the work of YSC and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by YSC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the board-ceo relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the board is both critical and expected. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about YSC’s mission to support young adults with breast cancer and who has a track record of leadership. Selected board members will have achieved leadership stature in the business, government, philanthropy, academic or nonprofit sector.

Expressly, board members are expected to do the following:

  • Uphold the mission and values of YSC
  • Contribute to identifying and applying YSC’s strategic vision and plans for the future
  • Attend quarterly board meetings
  • Attend at least 1 YSC event annually (YSC Summit, YSC Symposium, Congressional Women’s Softball Game, YSC Tour de Pink, regional events, etc.)
  • Attend board social activities
  • Actively participate in at least one board committee
  • Aid in YSC’s fundraising endeavors
  • Make a financial gift through the board’s give/get program
  • Be familiar with YSC’s bylaws, personnel policies, and other key policies guiding governance and operational practices
  • Appreciate and respect board-staff boundaries
  • Take part in the annual evaluation of the CEO
  • Help identify prospective board members

In particular, board members are expected to fulfill their legal and fiduciary responsibilities in the following ways:


  • Plan for, and attend in their entirety, board meetings as described above
  • Serve in leadership positions and committee assignments readily when asked
  • Respect the law of the governance documents, a duty of care and loyalty to YSC

Policy & Planning:

  • Play a part in the creation of policies through which the work of YSC is achieved
  • Make certain there is efficient organizational planning by going through, critiquing and approving annual budgets and work plans, in addition to long-range strategies
  • Be aware of constituents’ current needs


  • Ensure YSC’s long-term financial stability and integrity
  • Approve a yearly budget that is fiscally responsible
  • Verify that annual audits of YSC’s finances are conducted and otherwise supports the Board fulfillment of its fiduciary responsibility


  • Make every effort to establish that YSC has the resources to meet present-day and long-term financial solvency
  • Make a financial gift to YSC as described in the board approved give/get program
  • Comprehend and contribute to YSC’s fundraising endeavors
  • Use every occasion to elevate the profile of YSC in the community and to its constituents


  • Preserve independence and impartiality and serve with a sense of ethics and personal virtue
  • Completely divulge, at the first chance, information that may arise from a perceived or actual conflict of interest; or details that would have importance in board making decisions
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year, if necessary
  • Employ the powers entrusted for the good of all members of YSC, rather than for personal benefit
  • Regard the confidentiality of sensitive information known due to board service
  • Appreciate the diversity of opinions as communicated or acted upon by the board, its committees and membership, and formally record dissent as appropriate
  • Foster teamwork, cooperation, and partnership among the board, staff and constituents


  • Partake in the board’s year-end assessment of its own operation and suggest improvement in such areas as composition, organization, tenure, retention and responsibilities

Board terms/participation: 

  • Board members must serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for up to two additional two-year terms (maximum of 6 years of service)
  • Board meetings will be held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings or individually as appropriate
  • All board members are expected to attend all board meetings as part of their fiduciary responsibility
  • No more than one board meeting can be missed annually.
