Young Survival Coalition Announces New Conferences to Address Unique Needs of Young Women with Breast Cancer

New York, N.Y. (May 29, 2014) — To expand their efforts of supporting young women diagnosed with breast cancer, Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the premier nonprofit organization that supports young women with breast cancer, is excited to announce its new #YSC2015 Conferences – the national YSC Summit and Regional Symposiums.

Although breast cancer is less common in younger women, there are more than 250,000 women living in the U.S. who were diagnosed before their 41st birthday; and more than 13,000 more will be diagnosed during the next year. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 15 to 44. The emotional and medical concerns of young breast cancer survivors are different than those of women over age 40. YSC has been at the forefront of proving support for this unique population by working with survivors, caregivers and the medical, research, advocacy and legislative communities to increase the quality and length of life for young women diagnosed with breast cancer ages 40 and younger.

After co-hosting the Conference for Young Woman Affected by Breast Cancer (C4YW) for the past 13 years, YSC understands the importance of reaching, and connecting, young women diagnosed with breast cancer and their co-survivors (husbands, partners, siblings, parents, friends―anyone who supports them) with others. “As a young breast cancer survivor diagnosed at age 36, my first desire was to meet other young women who would understand what I was going through,” says Jennifer Merschdorf, Chief Executive Officer of Young Survival Coalition. “Over the last 16 years, YSC created a sisterhood of young breast cancer survivors nationwide that is strong, powerful, and needed.”

The #YSC2015 conference program will include both a large national summit and smaller more intimate local regional symposiums. The program is geared for those who are newly diagnosed, living with metastatic disease, several years out from diagnosis or supporting a young woman diagnosed.

The YSC Summit is a three-day national conference that will take place from March 6-8, 2015 in Houston, Texas. It will feature educational speakers and engaging workshops addressing the unique issues that young women with breast cancer face, along with special wellness activities. Participants will learn about the latest medical information, sex and intimacy after diagnosis, survivorship and quality-of-life issues, how to cope with the side effects and long-term implications of treatment, ways to implement healthy lifestyle changes, and be able to network with other young survivors.

YSC Regional Symposiums are one-day events that will take place across the country, starting in Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2015. The focus will be on the individual pursuit of resiliency and survivorship for young women affected by breast cancer and their co-survivors. The event will include educational and inspirational speakers and workshops, as well as opportunities to connect with survivors and co-survivors in your region. YSC is preparing for great growth of this exciting program; so while there’s only one symposium slated for 2015, more locations and dates will be announced in the coming year.

YSC will announce more details in the coming months. For more information about the conference visit:
