Research Think Tank Metastasis

Image

The Research Think Tank (RTT) Metastasis Work Group focused on the unique issues and concerns of young women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.

The group was composed of advocates:

  • Debbie Molis (chair)
  • Kim Casamassima
  • Stacy Gagas
  • Joy Simha

As well as physicians/researchers:

  • Dr. Silvia Formenti
  • Dr. Generosa Grana
  • Dr. Brunilde Gril
  • Ms. Roz Kleban
  • Dr. Larry Norton
  • Dr. Pat Steeg
  • Dr. Linda Vahdat

Research Priorities

Three of the 19 research priorities recommended by the RTT focused on metastasis. Below we list the priority, indicate any progress made since the RTT and list any open trials of which we are aware related to or focusing on these research priorities.

Do young women have different risk factors to develop MBC than older women, and how can those at greatest risk be identified?

Progress Made: Work In Progress

Recent research updates:

A recent study found a possible mechanism by which postpartum breast cancer is more aggressive and likely to metastasize.

Current research initiatives/studies:

The Metastic Breast Cancer Project (MBC Project) is asking women with metastatic breast cancer to share their tumor specimens and medical records to further research. One research question the Project will examine is what are some factors that lead to developing metastatic breast cancer at a young age.

What causes metastasis in younger women (post-adjuvantly, at presentation, dormancy), and how can it be prevented? Is there a difference between younger and older women?

Progress Made: Thumbs Down

Recent research updates:

A recent study found a possible mechanism by which postpartum breast cancer is more aggressive and likely to metastasize.

How can the psychosocial needs of young women with MBC and their families be better met?

Progress Made: Thumbs Up

Recent research updates:

YSC conducted a large comprehensive survey of the needs (including psychosocial needs) of young women with metastatic breast cancer, and we have presented those results across the globe. Two in-depth publications are forthcoming.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Clinical Trials

YSC has partnered with breastcancertrials.org to develop Metastatic Trial Search, which helps women with metastatic disease find clinical trials that are right for them. Search for a trial for yourself or a loved one.
