YSC RISE advocacy program for young breast cancer survivors

RISE Breast Cancer Advocacy Program

RISE: Respected Influencers through Science and Education is our new advocacy program for young breast cancer survivors, creating the next generation of educated breast cancer advocates.

RISE advocates are selected each year through a competitive application process and will gain knowledge in all aspects of breast cancer including science and research, advocacy, policy and the overall breast cancer landscape. RISE advocates make a three year commitment to YSC, two years of training and one year of service, including speaking on behalf of all young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. RISE advocates are an exclusive group within our volunteer structure and will be given the opportunity to represent YSC at external conferences and scientific discussions and participate on review boards for research.

The application period for the RISE program is currently closed. To be notified when the application process reopens, share your information below.

Meet the RISE Advocates

Class of 2017 Advocates
Welcome to the Class of 2017 YSC RISE advocates! Meet the advocates.

Legacy Advocates
We are fortunate to have a group of dedicated volunteers who have already completed the advocacy and breast cancer science trainings that will be provided to RISE advocates. These women will serve as RISE legacy advocates and will continue to represent YSC at conferences and scientific discussions, participate on review boards for research and serve as mentors to the incoming cohort of RISE advocates. Meet the legacy advocates.

Become a RISE Advocate

RISE is open to any interested breast cancer survivor, however, preference will be given to women initially diagnosed with breast cancer under age 40 and to women who have already established connections to YSC. Applicants must reside in the United States or Canada. Please review our application guidelines:

  • Stage 0 to III young survivors must be at least one year out from diagnosis as of January 2017 and have completed surgery and treatment (radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy). This does not include hormonal therapy (Tamoxifen, an aromatase inhibitor, with or without ovarian suppression) or completion of a year of Herceptin. Those on hormonal therapy or completing Herceptin may still apply.
  • Women living with metastatic breast cancer are welcome to apply, and we recognize they will most likely be in treatment while participating in RISE. The above treatment-related exclusion does not apply.
  • All applicants must be able to travel away from home at least two times during the calendar year and attend the entire conference or training to which they are being sent. YSC will cover travel and registration costs for RISE Advocates to attend these events.
  • It is YSC’s goal to invite a diverse group of candidates to participate in RISE. This includes geographic diversity, racial/ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, length of time since diagnosis and stage of diagnosis.
  • All applicants must be able to read, write and understand English.
  • Applications for 2016 are closed.

If you have any questions, please contact us at rise@youngsurvival.org.

If you have already been trained in the science of breast cancer through Project LEAD or other courses and served as an advocate, let us know! We look for people to join our team of RISE Legacy advocates throughout the year.
