Virtual Ride

[Getting Started] [Riding the 220 Miles] [Fundraising] [Additional Resources]

Online registration for the Virtual Ride is now open.

Not able to ride from Hershey, PA, to NYC in the 2009 Hershey's Tour de Pink, October 2-5, 2009? You can still be a part of this exciting event and raise funds for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) by becoming a Virtual Rider.

A Virtual Rider is anyone who wants to accomplish riding 220 miles in their own way, during their own time and not as part of the 4-day ride from Hershey, PA, to New York City. You can ride the course on your home streets, during spin classes, on your wind trainer or "virtually" in your gym.

All Virtual Riders will receive:
  • Dedicated personal Web page
  • Fundraising support
  • Each Virtual Rider to raise at least $250 will receive one Hershey's Tour de Pink cycling jersey

Riding an Indoor TrainerAll Virtual Riders are eligible for fundraising prizes and are invited to the closing ceremonies in New York City on October 5th.

How can I become a Virtual Rider?

  • Online registration is now open.
  • Establish your personal goal, with a minimum of 220 miles, and begin to accumulate your miles. Choose a goal you can meet and one that will encourage support from your donors.
  • Notify your potential donors via your personal Web page.
  • Start training, riding and raising funds.

As a Virtual Rider, you can start to accumulate the 220 miles as soon as you register. You must log 220 miles by the final day of the 2009 Hershey's Tour de Pink. You are required to fundraise while you are completing your 220-mile adventure. In order to get your 2009 Hershey's Tour de Pink cycling jersey, you must raise a minimum of $250.

Getting Started

Once you decide to be a Virtual Rider, determine if you want to ride the 220 miles by yourself or as part of a team.

If you decide to ride alone, next determine how you will accomplish the 220 miles. (See bullet list below.)

If you decide to ride as a Virtual Team, each member of the team must register as part of the team and each team member must raise $250.00 to get a jersey. You and your teammates need to decide how you will accomplish the 220 miles. You also should decide if each team member will ride 220 miles or if you will split the 220 miles amongst the team members. Then, decide how you will ride those miles. You can:

  • Ride outdoors
  • Ride a stationary bike in your house, at the gym or at your local bike shop
  • Take multiple spin classes to accumulate the 220 miles
  • Organize a Hershey's Tour de Pink event at a local gym or bike shop and ride the miles together on multiple bikes (example: 10 bikes, averaging 10 miles per hour, can finish 220 miles in 2 hours and 12 minutes. 10 miles per hour is a very comfortable pace during which you can talk, laugh and joke your way to the 220-mile mark!

Feel free to be creative, have fun and organize this however best suits your needs and resources). Remember that an actual event also will help to fulfill the YSC's mission of increasing awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

Riding the 220 Miles

Once you decide how you or your team will ride the 220 miles, start to track your progress. We've created a Hershey's Tour de Pink Riders club at MapMyRide.com where you can track your training miles. This is a private group; to be invited, please send an email to Tim Fives. There is also a Hershey's Tour de Pink Riders Facebook group. Join this group to connect with other riders and use it let your friends and fanily know how many miles you have logged and ask them for support.

You should talk to your local gym and see if they are willing to host a spin-a-thon. This can be a venue for you to involve other people and get more Virtual Riders as well as give you an additional fundraising base.

You also should talk to your local bike shop and see if they want to host a virtual event. Not only will this draw attention to your cause, but it can be great exposure for the bike shop. Consider asking the bike shop to donate a portion of the proceeds of all products purchased during the event to your fundraising campaign.

If you decide to ride outside, take pictures. These can be great fundraising tools as well. You can post the pictures on your personal fundraising page so your donors and potential donors can see your progress.

Fundraising

Set up your personal fundraising page. Include pictures and your personal reason for being a Virtual Rider. Also, be sure to visit our Fundraising page for more tips on reaching your fundraising goal.

YSC will provide you with brochures and DVDs for you to have at your event. These are essential fundraising tools because they let your potential donors know about the YSC and what they are supporting. In fact, the funds raised help to print and create these brochures and DVDs, which the YSC distributes, always at no charge, to young women affected by breast cancer.

Encourage your donors to donate online. This is the simplest way to keep track of your donations. If your donors want to write a check, the check should be made out to:

Young Survival Coalition
61 Broadway, Suite 2235
New York, NY 10006
Attn: Hershey's Tour de Pink

Note: Each check must have the rider's name and HTDP written in the memo portion to be credited to your campaign.
