When Jenny Sheppard was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2006 at the age of 37, she had two young children to raise and sought out groups of her peers but found little available. Luckily, she learned about the Young Survival Coalition through the book Fighting For Our Future and was able to find the help and support she needed through the bulletin board on the YSC website. Realizing the need for a local group for young women in Savannah, Jenny decided to start a YSC group when her treatment was completed and soon found Amy Heyel and Kelly Anderson to get the YSC Savannah off the ground in August 2007.
Since its beginning, YSC Savannah has been recognized as a local hero within the community by BMW/Komen Ultimate Drive for the Cure and has received a $100,000 grant from the Val Skinner Foundation to help expand the organization into South Carolina and the Low Country. Our Pink Tea also led to the first Tybee Ta-Tas fundraiser hosted by several amazing business women in the Tybee community. This wonderfully fun and unique event raised over $10,000 with $6,000 going to YSC for the local community.
As of May 2009, YSC Savannah is made up of approximately 35 survivors and volunteers and is recognized in the community as an important part of the area's cancer support network. We currently meet once a month for support and networking and gather often for breast cancer events, as well as social outings, such as concerts and community events. YSC Savannah also serves the Hilton Head surrounding areas.
