New York, New York - (November 7, 2003)
The Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the only international network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the critical concerns and issues unique to young women and breast cancer (www.youngsurvival.org), today unveiled a strategic plan which will guide them through the next three to five years - in their global effort to bridge the gap in resources and reduce the sense of isolation inherent in a young woman's breast cancer experience.
Since its inception in 1998 and incorporation in 1999, the YSC has experienced explosive growth and currently boasts a membership of close to 8,000 worldwide. The leaders of the YSC began this strategic planning process by focusing on their ultimate goal: To set the standard and be the foremost influencer of issues and resources focused on young women affected by breast cancer and ensure that the needs of this population are met. Now, over a year later, they have successfully mapped out a plan to carry out that goal. The process was facilitated by The Tecker Group, a leading strategy consulting firm.
"None of us could have ever imagined that the YSC would grow as quickly as it did in the past five years. In order to ensure that we could respond to this growth, meet the needs of our constituency and maintain our viability into the future, it was critical for us to take a long, hard look at who we are, and how we can channel this early success to best effect results on behalf of young women affected by breast cancer," said Randi Rosenberg, President of The Young Survival Coalition. "We have worked tirelessly to bring this plan to fruition and are very excited about carrying out our initiatives. Young women will be much better served by a strong, focused YSC, "added Rosenberg.
The YSC has developed a bold plan which defines a roadmap for our programmatic and operating goals, establishes a governance structure that is aligned with the organization's growth, and addresses the need to better manage grassroots demand for YSC's mission in local communities.
Key to the success of the YSC's strategic plan was the development of their core purpose: To improve the quality and quantity of life for young women affected by breast cancer. The YSC is a welcoming institution and serves multiple constituencies: survivors, friends and family, the medical community, funders, the breast health community, volunteers and employees. In order to adequately service this diverse community, the YSC's values are defined to embrace: Empowerment, Community, Collaboration, Credibility and Integrity, Innovation, and Inspirational Leadership.
Now celebrating it's 5th year anniversary, the YSC now has a definitive focus which will harness the energy and passion of our supporters and lead the organization into the next five years.
