Volunteering

Would you like to get involved with the YSC Houston? Here's how!

In Living Pink

In Living Pink is YSC Houston's annual fundraiser. Last year was our first event and was hugely successful. We were able to raise over $100,000 that is used to fund our programs such as our young survival kits. Last year, the event was at the Mercury Room downtown and included a VIP reception, dinner from Carrabba's, live entertainment from the Champion Sisters and an incredible silent auction that raised enough money to cover the cost of the entire event.

Over the next several months, we will need help finalizing decor, entertainment, invitations, etc. to make this year's event a huge success. There is much to do and we welcome help from everyone. We are hoping to utilize some non-survivor volunteers as well. If you or someone you know would like to help, please let Carla Strom know. Her number is 832-282-2752 and e-mail is cstrom@mdanderson.org.

YSC Events
The Houston YSC wants to bring meaningful programs to young women with breast cancer. The following are some programs we are hoping to implement in the next several months. Please contact Kendra Kirsch if you are interested. Her number is (281) 703-2792, and her e-mail is kendrakirsch@aol.com.

  • Screenings of You Are Not Alone and Fighting For Our Future
  • Speakers
    • Nutrition/Fitness
    • Fertility

  • Pure Romance Party (How to deal with sexual side-effects from treatment)

In addition to the formal events, we also want to continue to plan informal social gatherings so that we have an opportunity to get together in a supportive, yet positive environment. They might include dinner at a restaurant, a blanket-making party for our young survival kits, or a movie night. We are limited only by your imagination. If you are interested in helping with an informal social event, please contact Anne Kain at (281) 804-7449 or anne@kainmg.com.

YSC Programs

YSC Houston is in the process of implementing a number of programs. There are many volunteer opportunities, and we welcome everyone's involvement.

Young Survival Kits
We have created a kit for newly diagnosed patients that includes a copy of You Are Not Alone, Fighting for our Future, a Houston resource guide, brochures on fertility and reading your pathology, a form to be used to pair the patient with another young survivor, a key chain, and a hand-made blanket, all packaged in an attractive tote. Our hope is to provide the newly diagnosed patient with materials that are relevant to young women with breast cancer, and make them aware that they are not alone in their diagnosis.

Volunteer opportunities contact Kendra Kirsch at 281-703-2792 or kendrakirsch@aol.com.

  • Compile kits
  • Periodically deliver kits to partner hospitals. Currently, we are working with MD Anderson and Methodist Hospital.
  • Participate in our Breast Friends program where you will be paired with newly diagnosed patients who are similar to you.

Breast Health 101
This is the presentation that the YSC has prepared to give to healthy young women in the community. The presentation is in its final phase of approval and training sessions will be set up in the next couple of months.

Volunteer opportunities (Must complete Breast Health 101 training first)

  • Volunteer to speak at area high schools
  • Volunteer to speak at area colleges
  • Volunteer to speak to other miscellaneous groups such as civic organizations, Junior League, parent associations, etc.

Contact Kendra Kirsch at 281-703-2792 or kendrakirsch@aol.com if you are interested.

Adopt-A-Hospital
Through our Adopt-A-Hospital program, we hope to establish a contact with the breast centers at the various area hospitals. Through that contact, we will provide reference materials (YSC brochures, You Are Not Alone, Fighting for our Future) to the hospital's patients. In addition, in the future, we hope to utilize our contacts to distribute our Young Survival Kits as that program expands.

Volunteer opportunities:

Adopt the hospital near your home or where you are treated. As the YSC representative for that hospital, you would be responsible for making sure that it has a continual supply of the resource materials.

Contact Anne Kain at 281-804-7449 or anne@kainmg.com to identify area hospitals with breast centers and to volunteer.
