Newly Diagnosed Kits
Through the Beth Sanders Moore Breast Cancer Survivors'' Program (BSMP) at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, we distribute newly diagnosed kits to about 100 young women diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The BSMP is an effort to provide clinical support, research and educational resources for nearly 28,000 American women under the age of 45 who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The program was created in January 2005 at the surprise 50th birthday celebration of breast cancer survivor Beth Sanders Moore, in tribute to her courage in fighting the disease and longstanding efforts to educate others. For more information about this program: email bsmp@mdanderson.org or visit the M.D. Anderson website.
The Houston Affiliate of the Young Survival Coalition is proud to be able to provide newly diagnosed kits to BSMP and applauds their efforts in the fight against breast cancer.
The Knockout Roses
Young Breast Cancer Survivor's Support Group. We are partnering on this group with The Rose, a nonprofit, Houston-area organization for breast cancer screening, diagnosis and support. They already host several support groups, and this is the first one in the Houston area specifically for young women with breast cancer. Our hope is that this group will be a place where young survivors can come to meet each other and to talk about the issues that are unique to them. The project is led by the Houston Chapter Vice President, Liz Compton. "The Knockout Roses" support group meets the 2nd Monday of each month at The Rose Joan Gordon Center at 3400 Bissonnet, Suite 185. Call Amy at 713-660-6675 ext. 1 for more information.
Breast Health 101
The Houston Chapter is working with Komen Houston to implement this program. We are training volunteers on how to do the Breast Health 101 presentation and will then send them to high schools, colleges and other venues to bring the breast health message to young women. This effort is being led by our Program Director, Kendra Kirsch.
Video Screenings
