Outreach to Healthy Young Women and the General Public

The chance that a young woman in her teens or her 20s will develop breast cancer is small. Only 5% of all breast cancer cases occur in women under 40 years old. However, it is important for all women, young and old, to take responsibility for their health and bodies. By educating the public about breast health, we hope to empower and encourage young women to be their own best health advocates. A core value of the YSC is community and by educating friends, family members, partners and teachers, we will form a community that will be more aware of breast cancer and the fact that although rare, it can and does happen to young women.

Breast Health 101

This program is an education and awareness tool that can easily be used for groups of young women in high school and college to teach them the facts about breast health and cancer. Usually presented by a young breast cancer survivor, it talks about the importance of knowing your body, being aware of changes and knowing when to see a doctor. The message is that it is never too early to take responsibility for your health and well-being. For more information about when a Breast Health 101 presentation will be available in your community, please contact BH101@youngsurvival.org.

Partnership with Zeta Tau Alpha

The YSC is working with Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA), a national sorority, on outreach to college-age students that not only educates young women on the importance of taking control of their health, but includes an outreach plan that young women can implement themselves on their college campuses. ZTA collegians will be asked to distribute YSC's educational brochure (see below) to their campus student health centers. In addition, alumnae of ZTA will distribute brochures to medical facilities in their communities. Other components of this program include a survey to assess young women's knowledge of breast health and cancer, screenings of the YSC documentary "Fighting for Our Future", and presentations by local young survivors to women on college campuses nationwide.

What Every Young Woman Needs to Know About Breast Cancer...: YSC's Educational Brochure

The YSC educational brochure offers important information on young women and breast cancer including statistics and what a young woman should do if she feels a lump. A great resource for all young women and the health care community, this is one of the brochures that we encourage our volunteers to distribute in their communities to increase awareness about breast cancer in young women.
