YSC Houston

The Houston Chapter of the YSC started meeting in the fall of 2002. As of Spring 2006, we have 65 survivors on our e-mail list and around 25 active volunteers. In the past year we have grown substantially and we expect to grow much more as our newly diagnosed kits become available and as we become more recognized in the Houston breast cancer community and Houston community in general. In 2005, we raised almost $100,000 for through our annual event "In Living Pink". Through the generosity of those donors, we have been able to fund our initial 300 kits for newly diagnosed young women as well as begin programs such as our monthly support group, The Knockout Roses, and Breast Health 101, a community education program.

Some of our recent highlights
Fundraising: In 2005, we raised almost $100,000 for through our annual event "In Living Pink". Through the generosity of those donors, we have been able to fund our initial 300 kits for newly diagnosed young women. The money raised will also be used for additional kits and for other programs such as screenings of YSC videos. We are currently working on the 2006 In Living Pink. This effort is being led by Houston Chapter President Kristi Whiteside, Houston Chapter Vice President Liz Compton, Houston Chapter Development Chair Karissa Ma, and Houston Chapter Secretary and Marketing & PR chair Anne Kain.

Education: Last year, we partnered with Hassadah and spoke at various area high schools through their Check It Out program. We also partnered with Zeta to speak at the University of Houston. The speaking engagements were covered by our various members.

Advocacy: In the past 2 years Houston Chapter constituents went to Washington DC to help NBCC with breast cancer lobbying efforts.

Conference/Meeting Attendance: YSC Houston had a presence at both the November 2005 Affiliate Conference in New York and the February 2006 Annual Conference for Young Women with Breast cancer in Colorado. YSC Houston constituents also manned booths at the Sisters Network Conference in April of 2006 and The Rose's Winter Mammography Seminar in February of 2005 and 2006.
