YSC- Central Ohio Programs
Packets for Newly Diagnosed Patients: YSC - Central Ohio received a grant from the Columbus affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation. The core of this grant is an outreach effort to newly diagnosed young women. Packets contain local support and resources, YANA video and brochure, as well as a Circle Journey conversation kit.
Scholarship Program for the Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer: Members from the Central Ohio area have had representation at this conference almost since its inception. In 2006, we were able to fund 10 travel scholarships for Central Ohio members. With ongoing fundraising, we hope to offer several more.
"You Are Not Alone" (YANA): Area cancer centers and the Franklin County American Cancer Society (ACS) have been provided copies of the video and resource guide.
Hadassah Check It Out: YSC members serve as speakers and tell their personal stories in collaboration with Hadassah's educational breast health program. This program reaches out to healthy young women in Central Ohio high schools and colleges.
Educational Booth: The YSC provides educational and support materials at booths and tables at area health fairs, breast cancer walks and other related events.
Speaker Panel: YSC in Central Ohio volunteers speak at breast cancer awareness events, medical symposiums, and motivational events. Reviews are always outstanding and attendees are touched by the candor and knowledge level of our volunteers. Members have also received tremendous local media coverage.
OB/GYN Outreach: Under the direction of the National program, Central Ohio OB/GYN's will learn about the importance of breast health for young women and the seriousness of the possibility of young women being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Yahoo Listserve: ysc_columbus@yahoo.com Reaching out to over 100 members and serving as a method of communication and "breaking news" bulletins. Volunteer opportunities and local events are broadcast to the local members. National programs are often highlighted and readers given an opportunity to provide feedback on a local level.
Team Events: YSC participates in Komen Race for the Cure, ACS Making Strides, and Ohio Cancer Research Associates' Turkey Hop Walk.
Courage Night: On October 2004, YSC - Central Ohio hosted a Courage Night in conjunction with the National Courage Night initiative. Our goals were to honor one survivor and one young woman who lost her fight with breast cancer, and launch the release of "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy" by Geralyn Lucas.
"Breast Cancer Legacy": In November 2004, Discovery Health Network aired the second YSC documentary, "Breast Cancer Legacy." Concurrently, YSC-Central Ohio held a very successful collaborative screening (along with OhioHealth, Ohio State University, and Mount Carmel Cancer Genetics Programs) at the Arena Grand Theater. It featured a panel discussion with nationally recognized participants. Future screenings are in the works!
