Kelly O'Donnell* - Secretary
Kelly is a Quality Analyst with Aetna Inc and a Senior Fraud Prevention Specialist with Discover Card. She has a Bachelor's from the University of Akron in Industrial Management and The Ohio State University in Accounting, and is currently attending Ashland University working towards a Masters in Education. Kelly is a Reach to Recovery Volunteer for the American Cancer Society, a Wish Grantor for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and a volunteer for the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure. Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2001 as a result of her first screening mammogram. One of the hardest things for her was telling her 30-year old sister the preventative measures she would need to do to reduce her risk.
LeAnn Beran, MD
LeAnn Beran is a breast surgeon in private practice in Columbus, Ohio. After completing a general surgery residency, she pursued an additional year of breast fellowship training at Grant Medical Center. In addition to joining Grant's medical staff in private practice focusing on breast cancer surgery, she is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the National Consortium of Breast Centers, and she has associate status in the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons.
Susie Blair
Susie works as Director of Hadassah's Check It Out breast and testicular cancer program for high school students. She is active on the Komen Columbus affiliate education committee, as well as a Volunteer for Race for a Cure. Married to Bradley, a dentist and have two children, Daniel 22 and Melissa 20. Susie became active in breast awareness because her mother is a 30-year survivor, and Susie has witnessed so much progress over the years in terms of diagnosis and treatment.
Kelly Borth, CBC, APR
Kelly is president of GREENCREST, an advertising, marketing and public relations agency, is actively involved in the Columbus business community. She serves as a board member and advisor for many non-profit organizations and businesses. She has been named one of Columbus' Power 100 by Smart Business magazine. Kelly was named the 1998 Communicator of the Year by the Columbus Chamber Sales Executive Club, a finalist for the 1999 Supporter of Entrepreneurship Award by Ernst & Young, was recognized as the Columbus chapter of National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) 2003 Member of the Year and a 2005 recipient of its Visionary Award.
Katie Carter
Katie has been Executive Director of Komen Columbus since 2001. She has been closely involved with the incredible growth of the Komen Columbus affiliate and has been a crucial part of the Komen Columbus Affiliate Board and team. Both her Grandmother and Aunt are Breast Cancer Survivors, which has led to her tremendous passion for working with Komen Columbus Volunteers and Survivors. Katie holds an Undergraduate Degree from Capital University, as well as a Graduate Degree: Masters in Public Administration from Ohio University. Katie and her supportive husband David, who is a dedicated Komen Columbus Volunteer, live in Westerville.
Rachel Faulkner
Rachel became focused on the issues surrounding young women with breast cancer when her best friend and colleague, was diagnosed at age 35, while on an out of state work assignment. Rachel currently works as an Organizational Development Consultant for NetJets, Inc., specializing in instructional design, talent development, and job analysis. Rachel has a knack for teaching adults anything from computer software to conflict resolution and is fluent in Spanish. She spent one year of High School in Costa Rica as an Exchange Student and then went on to focus on Latin American Studies and Spanish in college at The Ohio State University.
Barron Henley, Esq. & Paul J. Unger, Esq.
Paul J. Unger and Barron Henley are attorneys and founding members of of Henley March & Unger Consulting, Inc (HMU) Consulting, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. They ‘job share" a seat on the YSC Central Ohio Executive Council.
Prior to forming HMU, Paul J. Unger was Vice President of a Columbus-based technology-consulting firm. He received his B.S./B.A. in political science (cum laude) from Capital University. He received his J.D. from Capital University Law School (cum laude, Order of the Curia, Law Review). He is a member of The American Society of Trial Consultants, the Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations, the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Franklin County Trial Lawyers Association. Paul is an Adjunct Professor for Capital University Law School's Paralegal Program.
Barron Henley is an attorney, a "legal technologist" with 15 years of experience. He received his B.S./B.A. (marketing and economics) and J.D. from The Ohio State University and is a member of the American, Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations, and the Worthington Estate Planning Council. Barron is a member of the ABA Law Practice Management Section and the Technology Committee, the Visioneer Legal Advisory Board, and the Columbus Bar Association Law 2010 Committee. He is a member and former Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association Law Office Automation & Technology Committee.
Jill Hymer * - Chapter Co-Founder
Jill started her own marketing and public relations consulting business, JAH Communications, in March 2005. She joined the YSC in the fall of 2001 and was a Lifetime Television® Breast Cancer Hero in 2002. Jill was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer on July 6, 2001 at the age of 30 and only three weeks after having her daughter, Kennedy. In August of 2002 while finishing her final rounds of chemotherapy, she became pregnant with her son Zachary. Jill currently lives in Worthington with her husband Larry and their two children.
Laurie Kapps-Kellar, RN*
Laurie is a registered nurse with a master of science in mental health nursing from Ohio State University, and works as a Breast Health Specialist Nurse for Mount Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. In this capacity, she provides education and support to the women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and their families. Laurie is a breast cancer survivor, and co-facilitate a breast cancer support group at Mount Carmel. She is a member of NBBC, a Project LEAD graduate, and has participated for 10 years in their annual advocacy conference and lobby day in Washington, DC. She sits on the Columbus Community Clinical Oncology Program Institutional Review Board, and the NSABP Patient Advocacy Committee. Laurie is a wife, and mother of two children, 16 and 19 years of age.
Heather Pick*
Heather serves as the weekday morning and noon anchor for the local CBS affiliate in Columbus, WBNS10tv. She lives with metastatic breast cancer. Heather and husband Joe are the proud parents of two children, a daughter, and a son.
Charles L. Shapiro, MD
Dr. Shapiro is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. He is the Director of Breast Medical Oncology, and Co-Director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Services for the James Cancer Hospital. Dr. Shapiro's research interests are focused the long-term side effects of adjuvant therapy, and the development of novel therapies for breast cancer. In particular, he has studied anthracycline-related cardiac effects and the impact of chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure on skeletal health in young women. He is currently the principal investigator on a randomized Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) trial evaluating zolendronic acid in women with chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure. He also serves as principal investigator on a number of investigator-initiated trials in advanced breast cancer combining taxanes with biological agents including bortezomib, bevacizumab, and low-dose suramin. Dr. Shapiro is Director of the Clinical Scientific Review Committee for the Comprehensive Cancer Center.
