Our Programs
YSC Atlanta is extensively involved in the Atlanta community. The groups focus has been on education and outreach to various populations. In the medical community the group reaches the OB/GYN community with a mailing to distribute information about YSC as well as inform physicians about the facts surrounding young women and breast cancer. The goal is that a young woman is never told she is too young for breast cancer. Brochures and fact sheets are distributed to all major area hospitals, oncologist groups, cancer centers and breast care surgeons. YSC Atlanta has also sent several members to Project Lead training to better advocate in the medical community.
For healthy outreach, YSC Atlanta developed a fun and informational postcard targeting metro Atlanta young women aged 18-45 discussing the importance of breast health and signs and symptoms that should be evaluated. This is a yearly planned mailing. In addition, YSC Atlanta regularly participates in health fairs and community events that Tour De Ga to distribute material. The Breath Health 101 presentation is a large part of our programming and we reach out to the local area high schools and colleges both on our own and in partnership with other breast cancer organizations. YSC averages 10 presentations a year.
For young women already dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis we offer a monthly support group as well as a peer to peer network program through ResourceLink where newly diagnosed young women can be patterned with a fellow breast cancer survivor. Atlanta also developed and distributes a newly diagnosed resource kit containing valuable information and resources in a useful canvas bag with a water bottle and bandanna. This kit has been successfully distributed through the local cancer centers.
YSC Atlanta continues to seek partnerships with fellow organizations to provide information, and resources for young women and the medical community as well as opportunities for YSC volunteers to learn about becoming an educated advocate.
