Outreach to Healthy Young Women and the General Public

The chance that a young woman in her teens or her 20s will develop breast cancer is small. Only 5% of all breast cancer cases occur in women under 40 years old. However, it is important for all women, young and old, to take responsibility for their health and bodies. By educating the public about breast health, we hope to empower and encourage young women to be their own best health advocates. A core value of the YSC is community and by educating friends, family members, partners and teachers, we will form a community that will be more aware of breast cancer and the fact that although rare, it can and does happen to young women.

The YSC's Educational Brochure offers important information on young women and breast cancer including statistics and what a young woman should do if she feels a lump. A great resource for all young women and the health care community, this is one of the brochures that we encourage our volunteers to distribute in their communities to increase awareness about breast cancer in young women.

YSC is often asked about our position on breast self-examination. In response, the YSC's Position on Breast Self Examination(BSE) and Early Detection was developed.
