Camp Lightheart

Tuesday, August 21 @ 9:00 a.m. - Friday, August 24 @ 1:00 p.m.

Camp Lightheart is an overnight camp for children between the ages of 8 and 14 who are Hudson Valley residents and have a parent with breast cancer. Sponsored by Breast Cancer Options, Camp Lightheart will be held on the campus of Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. The campers will be in a safe, nurturing and fun-loving environment. Through carefully organized activities, the children will be given frequent opportunity to talk about their individual situations. Because they all have the common bond of a parent with breast cancer, their feelings of isolation or of "feeling different" will be lessened. It is our hope that each child will leave camp feeling less isolated, more supported and most importantly that their hearts will indeed be lightened.
The United Breast Cancer Foundation, in partnership with Omega, has very generously given scholarships to cover the costs of lodging, meals and use of their facilities. The sleep-away camp will run for three and a half days, from 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 21st-1:00 p.m. Friday, August 24th. There is no charge for camp. For more information, call 845-339-HOPE (4673) or visit the Breast Cancer Options website.

Lee National Denim Day

August 8th to September 30th, daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

On Friday, October 5, thousands of employees across the United States will be participating in the annual Lee National Denim Day to support breast cancer research and advocacy programs of the National Breast Cancer Coalition.
From August 8th to September 30th, the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and advanced breast cancer survivor and patient advocate, Dikla Benzeevi, have partnered together to staff a phone bank to encourage past, present and new companies to participate in this year's Lee National Denim Day.
This is where we need your help! YSC and EIF are looking for volunteers to sign up companies to participate in the annual campaign to support breast cancer. We are looking for volunteers with the following skill set: - Personable and comfortable talking on the telephone
- Ability to speak passionately about the importance of supporting breast cancer initiatives such as Lee National Denim Day and the Young Survival Coalition.
- Computer and data entry skills.
Volunteers will be working out of the EIF offices in downtown LA (1201 West 5th Street), and we ask that they commit to a minimum of three hours per shift (shifts are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
For your commitment you will receive a special Lee and YSC gift, and we will provide food and drink during your volunteer time. Additionally, the YSC will be receiving a $10,000 grant for programs and services for young women affected by breast cancer.
We would be delighted to have you participate in this amazing campaign. Your work will allow more research to be done on all women diagnosed with breast cancer so we can find the most targeted treatments and to find a cure for the disease.
If you are interested in volunteering please email Janine Kurmen at janinek@youngsurvival.org with your name, phone and email. We will then have a representative from EIF contact you to arrange for training and your volunteer times.

Film Screening: Jonna's Body, Please Hold

Two screenings: 12 Noon and 3 p.m.

Sitting in her bedroom in despair and loneliness after a particularly noxious chemotherapy treatment, Jonna Tamases stared at her baby toe and wondered, what is up with my body? How is it dealing with this disease? How is it helping me get through this? Through her imagination and a few inspired aches and pains, the play, Jonna's Body, please hold, came to life.
Take the bizarre ride into the inner world of 'Jonna's Body,' where life's daily chaos is corralled by Pearl, Jonna's loyal, sassy internal receptionist, as she fields calls from a parade of off-beat body parts with never-ending needs.
Jonna's Body, please hold the film version will be screening Labor Day weekend at the Laemmle Theater, Downtown (bottom level of the Marriott Hotel) at 345 S. Figueroa St. in Los Angeles. Pay parking is available across the street at the World Trade Center. Enter the lot from Figueroa St. between 3rd and 4th Streets. Purchase tickets at the theater box office.
