YSC Kansas City Volunteers at the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Pink FountainWelcome to YSC Kansas City, which began in late 2002 when a handful of young survivors met at the Kansas City home of Lanita Moss, one of the three co-founders of YSC nationally. Since then, we have grown into an energetic, diverse group of survivors as well as fantastic co-survivors committed to educating others about breast cancer in young women and supporting young breast cancer survivors.

Through our Community Outreach, we educate the greater Kansas City Metro about breast cancer in young women and advocate to our legislators on a local, regional and national level on important health issues. Our local Survivor Programming provides programs and support from diagnosis through learning how to thrive after breast cancer. We offer peer support with trained young survivors as well as Newly Diagnosed Resource Kits packed with information and comfort items. Our educational programs provide valuable learning opportunities for young survivors with topics such as fitness and nutrition, intimacy after breast cancer, and building a survivorship plan to name a few. We also kick off our shoes and have some fun getting acquainted, socializing and supporting each other with our You Are Not Alone Social Networking activities. Our largest fundraiser of the year is In Living Pink, which celebrates, honors and remembers young breast cancer survivors.

News

A Banner Year for YSC Kansas City
YSC Kansas City at the Kansas City Roller Warriors2009 has been a tremendous year for YSC Kansas City. After seven years as an all volunteer group, we were able to hire our first staff person, Jennifer Johnson, who serves as our Executive Director. Thanks to a sub-lease with our friends at Cancer Action, we also moved into our first office space allowing us to reach more young women. Through our point of contact program and newly diagnosed resource kits, we have been able to provide support to nearly 100 local young breast cancer patients this year. Our seven survivor education and social programs helped young survivors with their new sense of normal and to realize they are not alone. Thanks to a grant from the Ribbons of Pink Foundation, we were able to provide scholarships for seven local women to attend the Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer in Dallas and, through our community outreach efforts, we have educated thousands of local young women about breast health.

Panera Bread Co. Becomes a New Partner
Accepting a Generous Check from Panera Bread CompanyOur second annual In Living Pink gala had over 200 attendees and raised over $41,000 for our programs while celebrating young Kansas City survivors. We were thrilled to begin a new partnership with Panera Bread Company this year. They donated proceeds from sales of their Pink Ribbon Bagels in the month of October and hosted a golf tournament, Swing for Life, which benefitted YSC KC. We were also honored to continue partnerships with Midtown Athletic Club, Kappa Epsilon of the UMKC School of Pharmacy and the Kansas City Roller Warriors who helped raise money for YSC through their own fundraisers. The Olathe Junior Service League also generously provided a grant to help fund social activities for young survivors.

YSC Kansas City Hosts the Annual Affiliate Conference!
We were honored to host the annual Affiliate Leadership Conference in Kansas City in November, which allowed us to show off our hometown and share some great Kansas City BBQ with the other YSC Affiliates and staff.

We cannot fulfill our mission without the generous support of volunteers, sponsors and donors. Thanks to everyone who helps us carry out our mission! We look forward to 2010 and ensuring that no young woman in Kansas City faces breast cancer alone.
