Marcia Stein, Chief Executive Officer With over 20 years experience as a health care leader in both nonprofit and for-profit environments, Marcia is a 12-year breast cancer survivor who has served nine years on YSC's Board of Directors. She is an entrepreneur dedicated to building and working with organizations focused on the provision of health care services to underserved populations. Most recently, Marcia served as co-founder and Chief Development Officer for Senior Whole Health (SWH), an innovative, multi-state organization providing coordinated care to the elderly and disabled. Marcia is a seasoned executive, experienced in all phases of organizational development, fundraising, strategic planning and operations through her work with SWH and YSC as well as with Neighborhood Health Plan, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Core Health. She holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Chicago and Boston University and a Masters in Physics from Tufts University. Marcia and her husband Nick have a 10-year-old son, Ben. Stacy Lewis, CHES, YSC Vice President of Programming Stacy brings over 12 years experience creating, developing and administering services and programs for those with special healthcare needs. She is recognized as an effective leader and an individual dedicated to quality program delivery. For five years, Stacy served as the Deputy Director and Director of Programs for SHARE: Self-help for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancer; before that she served as the Community Executive and Director of Breast Health for the American Cancer Society — Eastern Division. She is a graduate of William Paterson University and credentialed as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) by the National Commission For Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Stacy will be responsible for enhancing the YSC's program capabilities and spearheading new initiatives including those that address the specific needs of young women from diverse backgrounds and those who are living with metastatic disease. Lori Atkinson, Affiliate Development Director Lori is a nine-year breast cancer survivor who has been involved as a volunteer with the YSC for the past six years. Her involvement has focused primarily on the organizational structure of the YSC's local groups and volunteers, as she started the first YSC affiliate in Indiana. Since then she has been a member of the Affiliate Task Force, Volunteer Steering Committee and has been involved with YSC's strategic planning. She is also a graduate of the National Breast Cancer Coalition's Project LEAD® and Clinical Trials LEAD® educational courses for advocates. Lori is responsible for managing the YSC's fifteen affiliates as well as developing a growth strategy for new affiliates of the YSC. Lori lives in a small town outside of Indianapolis, IN. Virginia Falces, YSC Website Manager With over 13 years experience as a writer, editor, technical editor and, most recently, website editor and producer, Virginia is responsible for management of the YSC website and its content. Virginia has both for-profit experience with Office.com, JPMorgan and Qualcomm Inc. and non-profit experience as a volunteer at Gilda's Club and as a press officer and editor for various United Nations NGOs while living in Geneva, Switzerland. Re-entering the workplace after three years at home with her children, Virginia is glad to be back at work in the nonprofit sector, supporting a cause that has affected both family members and close friends. Virginia is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. Melissa Snyder, Program Manager Born and raised in the Buckeye state, Melissa moved to New York City to pursue a career in non-profit management. She joined the YSC staff in October 2006 after spending four years working in non-profit arts administration at the Roundabout Theatre Company and New York City Opera. Melissa is a graduate of Ohio University and holds a Bachelor's degree in Human and Consumer Sciences. She lives in Harlem with her cat, Jellybean. Gretchen Walton, YSC Houston Affiliate Manager In 2007, Gretchen joined the staff of the Young Survival Coalition as the first Affiliate Coordinator for the Houston, Texas Chapter and the overall organization. Gretchen is a licensed attorney and public health professional who has spent her career in both the for-profit and nonprofit health care sector. Recently, Gretchen completed a certificate program for nonprofit executives at Rice University and upon completion was asked to become part of the instruction staff for the legal and ethical requirements for nonprofits. In her spare, time Gretchen enjoys cooking and chasing her toddler son. Amy Phillips, YSC Central Indiana Affiliate Manager Shortly after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, Amy began volunteering for the YSC Central Indiana Chapter. She has been involved in all aspects of this very active Chapter but is most passionate about reaching out to newly diagnosed women, developing innovative programs and fostering community collaborations. In 2007, she was awarded the Lisa Mucillo Excellence in Volunteering Award and co-founded the Indiana Joint Council for Women's Cancers. She has completed YSC's Point of Contact and ACS's Reach to Recovery training programs. Amy earned a B.A. in International Studies and a B.A. in Business Administration from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. She lives in suburban Indianapolis with her husband and two children. Courtney Bugler, YSC Atlanta Executive Director Courtney became involved with the YSC in 2006, shortly after her diagnosis at the age of 29. Courtney has worked in event management, sales and public speaking. She spent four years traveling around the world working aboard the world's major cruise lines. Most recently, she left a career as a television scriptwriter to devote herself full time to the organization to which she is so passionately dedicated. Courtney holds a B.S. in theater from Northwestern University. She is both a Project LEAD® and Quality Care Project LEAD® Graduate. In her free time, Courtney sings with a breast cancer survivor choir and spends time with her husband Alan and four big dogs. Jenna Glazer, Director of Development Jenna is a four-year breast cancer survivor and was an active volunteer with YSC for several years before becoming Associate Director of Development. With a passion for breast cancer advocacy and awareness, Jenna has lobbied on Capitol Hill and in Albany on breast cancer issues and volunteers on the SHARE hotline, speaking to newly diagnosed women. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and graduated cum laude from Brooklyn Law School. She is a graduate of National Breast Cancer Coalition's Project LEAD®, an educational course for breast cancer advocates. Jenna was a commercial litigation attorney for many years prior to joining the nonprofit sector and is thrilled to be supporting a cause that is so important to her and many of her closest friends. Naomi Gewirtz, YSC Northern New Jersey Executive Director Naomi Gewirtz joined the Young Survival Coalition in 2008 as the Executive Director of the Northern New Jersey Chapter. Naomi has worked in nonprofit programming and management for the past eight years, working for both national and local organizations. Naomi's work experience includes strategic planning, event planning and programming, volunteer management and fundraising. She has worked with smaller organizations to develop and maintain their membership by enhancing their publications, websites and communication techniques. Naomi holds a BSW from Indiana University and an MSW with a concentration in Administration, Policy & Planning from Rutgers. Naomi is excited to be working for an organization that she feels passionately about and one where she thinks her experience and skills will be well utilized. Naomi lives in northern New Jersey with her husband and daughter. Krysti Hughett, SurvivorLink & MetsLink Specialist Krysti is a metastatic Survivor of Inflammatory Breast Cancer, first diagnosed in March 2005 after a mis-diagnosis. Even with IBC in both breasts, her mammogram showed nothing, and there wasn't a lump! Since then, she has made it her mission to inform women and medical professionals about IBC. Thanks to her breast cancer journey, Krysti became an employee of the Young Survival Coalition and facilitates our national SurvivorLink and MetsLink programs along with medical reporting and other special projects. Krysti received extensive training through the Research Advocate Mentor Program at IU Breast Cancer Center of Excellence and Project LEAD Institute. She attends ASCO and SABCS as a patient advocate and does grant review for Komen National and the Department of Defense. She is a founding member of Indy SurviveOars Dragon Boat Team and an Indiana Casting For Recovery Team Member and a speaker's bureau member for both YSC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. She is co-founder of the Indianapolis Cancer Research Advocacy Community and she has supported science by participating in five clinical trials. Krysti's blessed to have her husband Bill, "who wears pink," and three wonderful daughters. Alane Davis, YSC Duluth Program Manager Alane is celebrating the ten-year anniversary of her original cancer diagnosis at the age of 31. After her diagnosis she felt isolated and alone. When she found the Young Survival Coalition online she discovered a supportive network of thousands of women just like her who had been told they were "too young for breast cancer." For the past five years, Alane has worked to bring the Young Survival Coalition to Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin beginning as the YSC's first Community Volunteer Group and now as the full-fledged YSC Duluth Affiliate. Alane now serves as the Program Manager of the Duluth Affiliate and is proud to work every day to bring the YSC to all newly diagnosed women throughout the state so they can know they are not alone. Alane holds a Bachelors Degree in Art that she uses to creatively approach fundraising projects and brainstorm ideas for new programs to better serve the women throughout her service area. Michelle Esser, YSC Philadelphia Program Manager Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, at the age of 37 when her children were 3 and 6 years old. Ms. Esser has been a key part of YSC's Greater Philadelphia Affiliate since its inception, chairing the education and outreach committee, acting as the group's Secretary, Co-Chair of communications and grant coordinator as a volunteer. Michelle developed and continues to maintain a newsletter for YSC of Greater Philadelphia and was the assistant chair of their inaugural In Living Pink. In 2008, Michelle was the recipient of YSC's Lisa Muccilo award for excellence in volunteering. Michelle completed the National Breast Cancer Coalition's Project LEAD and Quality Care Project LEAD training and is a team leader for Pennsylvania on Lobby Day. Michelle has also acted as a consumer reviewer for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program. Michelle holds her law degree as well as a Master's of Business Administration from Villanova University. Julie Burns, YSC Affiliate Coordinator Dana McCaw, Development Associate Following a brief career as a professional ballet dancer and after earning her BA in Art History from Hunter College, Dana McCaw was introduced to her career in nonprofit administration and fundraising while working for several arts-related organizations. Dana has extensive experience with planning and managing large-scale fundraising events, individual donor relations, as well as educational and community outreach. Dana is thrilled to have made the transition into the healthcare sector with an organization as worthwhile and inspiring as YSC. Dana lives in Manhattan with her husband, William Lane. |
